French Drain Installation Detroit

Detroit French Drain Installation Experts

Good drainage in the landscape is as important as proper irrigation. Too much water in landscaped areas during wet weather Detroit landscape drainage can result in numerous plant diseases and can even kill sensitive plants. Overly wet turf areas are prone to soil compaction and scarring from footprints and mowing equipment. In addition, drainage around buildings is important to prevent leaks and moisture intrusion into building foundations and walls.

Surface drainage systems aim to collect excess surface water from hardscaping, planter beds, window wells, and specific turf areas where water tends to collect. Water enters a surface landscape drainage system through catch basins, which have a sump area that collects debris to prevent clogging of the piping.

A French drain, when installed properly will collect water from your home’s yard and expel it further away. French drains can be used at wet points in your yard to collect water and direct it away from your home’s foundation. Inside, these systems direct the water to your sump pump. Outside, they will direct it completely away from your property. French drains are buried and depend on gravity to help them direct water away from your home. To avoid clogging, it is necessary to install these drains with a downward slope of at least Ľ inch per foot. Our experts at Deans Tree Transplanting and Landscaping have been perfectly installing French drains and are happy to help!

Commonly Used Landscape Drainage Systems in Metro Detroit

  • Catch basins and the drainage grates that go on top of them are available in a variety of sizes and styles depending upon the application.
  • Round drainage grates are used in turf areas.
  • Square drainage grates are used for hardscaped areas, walkways, driveways, parking lots, around swimming pools, etc.
  • Atrium drainage grates have a raised “domelike” design to prevent debris from building on top of the grate openings. These are used in window wells, planter areas, and other applications where bark mulch, stone, or landscape debris would tend to cover drain openings.

The catch basin size should be selected based on the expected water volume to be collected. Similarly, the pipe carrying water from the catch basin must be adequately sized to handle the flow from all connected basins. It's wise to size slightly larger than necessary for safety, as the additional material cost is minimal, while undersizing can lead to costly errors. For areas exposed to weight or traffic, consider using a concrete catch basin and/or a metal drainage grate for added durability. The drainage line connecting catch basins should always be solid (non-perforated) in design, with both solid PVC and corrugated plastic piping being suitable options.

Another effective surface drainage solution is the channel drain, commonly used in paved areas to manage water runoff. Channel drains function as extended troughs or catch basins covered by long grates. Standard channel drains are typically 10 feet long and 4 inches wide, and, like catch basins, they connect to a solid piping system for efficient water removal.

Detroit Sub-Surface Landscape Drainage Solutions

The most common type of sub-surface drainage in Detroit is the French drain or underground collection system. These drains collect water from saturated soils and direct it to a designated outlet, helping to prevent water accumulation in low spots and protecting drainage-sensitive plants. Sub-surface drainage is an effective way to manage excess water and maintain healthy landscaping.

Downspout Drainage for Detroit Landscapes

Drain lines can efficiently redirect roof water from downspouts away from buildings and planting areas. This is particularly useful when the natural slope around a property doesn't naturally direct water away from the foundation. Downspouts can be connected to solid PVC or corrugated plastic drainpipes to ensure roof water is carried safely away from structures, protecting your home and landscaping.

Efficient Gutter Drainage in Detroit

A well-maintained drainage system starts with properly functioning gutters. Gutters channel rainwater away from your home’s foundation, preventing water damage. To ensure optimal performance, keep gutters free of clogs and ensure water flows away from your property at downspout exits. For added protection, we offer downspout extensions to direct water further into your yard, safeguarding your foundation and landscaping.

French Drain INSTALLATION Detroit

French drains are an effective solution for collecting sub-surface water from poorly drained areas and directing it to a main drainage line, dry well, ravine, or street. They can also intercept runoff from neighboring properties, carrying it away before it impacts your landscape.

Constructed with simple materials—pea gravel or crushed rock, woven landscape fabric, and a perforated drainage pipe (typically corrugated)—French drains are both practical and efficient.

To install a French drain, dig a trench designed to carry water away from the problem area. Ideal locations for these drains include the bases of slopes, along retaining walls, or any area where water tends to pool. Ensure the trench is properly sloped to encourage water flow toward the intended destination.

Line the trench with landscape fabric, then place a 4" or 6" perforated drainage pipe at the bottom. Backfill the trench with gravel and wrap the landscape fabric around the gravel completely. This prevents surrounding soil from mixing with the gravel, keeping the porous spaces open to allow water to flow freely through the drain.
